Design Engineer

Nominal

Nominal builds software and data solutions for organisations testing complex systems—like rocket engines, drones, satellites, and nuclear reactors.

We’re backed by General Catalyst, Founders Fund, and Lux Capital, and already work closely with both commercial aerospace companies and the Department of Defense.

Our team includes people from SpaceX, Palantir, Lockheed Martin, and NASA, united by the goal of helping hardware engineers test advanced tech faster, safer, and more efficiently.

The Role

As a Product Designer / Design Engineer, you’ll work across design and engineering to simplify complex workflows and build intuitive tools.

You’ll lead the design and development of critical features and help shape how data is visualised, analysed, and understood by technical users.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll collaborate closely with customers and internal teams to build high-performance user experiences.

What You’ll Do

Design and ship full product workflows, from initial idea to final implementation.

Translate customer needs into functional, responsive, and accessible interfaces.

Use modern frontend tech like React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS to build and iterate fast.

Work closely with customers to gather feedback and continuously improve the platform.

Contribute to strategic design and product decisions that shape the future of Nominal.

What We’re Looking For

3+ years experience in a design engineering or similar role.

A strong portfolio that shows both product thinking and technical execution.

Proficiency in Figma and experience with modern frontend stacks—React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS.

Comfort working with APIs and integrating them cleanly into UI.

Ability to explain your design decisions and adapt to technical constraints creatively.

Interest in or ability to work in technical domains like aerospace and defense, even without direct experience.

Willingness to dive into complex systems and visit customers to understand real-world use cases.

Bonus If You Have

Experience in aerospace, defense, or energy tech.

Background in HCI or working with large datasets and high-performance UIs.

Familiarity with tools like WebGL or other advanced data viz libraries.

Benefits & Perks

100% medical, dental, and vision coverage.

Unlimited PTO and sick leave.

Free lunch, snacks, and coffee in the office.

Professional development stipend and annual company retreat.

Salary

$120,000 – $200,000 per year, depending on experience.

Equity grants are also part of the package, so you’ll share in the company’s growth and success.

Inclusion

Nominal welcomes applicants of all backgrounds and identities. Diversity and inclusion are part of how we build strong teams and better tools.
