Senior Product Designer

Forerunner

Forerunner builds modern, mission-critical software for local governments — tools that help communities manage risk, strengthen resilience, and navigate challenges like flooding, emergency response, disaster recovery, and infrastructure oversight. Their platform supports the public servants making high-stakes decisions every day, and the company’s mission is centred on equipping communities with tools as adaptive and dynamic as the problems they face.

As a Senior Product Designer, you’ll shape experiences that influence how public agencies operate, communicate risk, track grants, enforce codes, and manage assets. The work sits at the intersection of clarity, responsibility, and impact. Design quality directly affects trust, and trust directly affects how communities prepare and respond when it matters most. This isn’t cosmetic design — it’s systems thinking, research, and execution that helps people do essential work under pressure.

You’ll lead complex design initiatives from discovery through launch, partnering with product managers and engineers to define problem spaces, identify measurable outcomes, and anticipate the complexities and edge cases that show up in civic workflows. Research plays a central role: interviews, field context visits, task analysis, and validation loops all feed into shaping strategy. You’ll move fluidly between low-fidelity exploration and polished interaction design, ensuring accessibility and clarity throughout.

Your responsibilities span defining end-to-end flows, prototyping at multiple fidelities, validating solutions with real users, and guiding engineering through implementation. You’ll contribute to the design system and bring consistency and scalability to interfaces across web and mobile. Strong documentation, clear communication, and the ability to align teams in ambiguity are essential, as is an instinct for simplifying dense workflows without compromising nuance.

This role suits someone who has led product design efforts in complex environments and influenced direction beyond pure execution. You should have a portfolio that demonstrates crisp UX thinking, strong systems intuition, and an ability to make complicated processes feel approachable. Proficiency in Figma, fluency in discovery methods, and comfort navigating ambiguity are all key. Forerunner values collaboration and humility — designers are expected to elevate peers, facilitate alignment, and contribute to a culture where feedback is shared openly and craft is taken seriously. Experience in civic tech, climate resilience, or other data-heavy, high-stakes domains is a plus.

Forerunner offers competitive compensation, strong health and wellness benefits, quarterly wellness reimbursement, and flexibility through its remote-first approach. The team is small, interdisciplinary, and mission-driven, with a high bar for design craft and consistent engagement with real-world partners. Designers speak at events like Figma’s Config and are deeply integrated into the company’s strategy and storytelling.
