Principal Product Designer
Babbel
Babbel builds digital language learning products for consumers and businesses, driven by the mission of creating mutual understanding through language. Since 2007, Babbel has helped millions of learners connect across cultures with 60,000 lessons in 15 languages. Its approach combines expert-created content, data-driven personalisation, and a diverse team of over 80 nationalities working from Berlin and New York. With more than 25 million subscriptions sold, Babbel is recognised as the world’s most innovative language company by Fast Company in 2023.
The Role
As a Principal Product Designer, you will work across Babbel’s product experience alongside cross-functional and central teams to shape the next generation of language learning. This is a strategic and hands-on role where you will envision new product experiences based on data and insights, drive decision-making around design methods and processes, and build industry-defining experiences for language learners. You will collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and engineers to align product vision, while also mentoring other designers and evolving Babbel’s design discipline.
What You’ll Bring
You have at least five years of product design experience within a consumer-focused, high-performing organisation. Your portfolio demonstrates problem-solving skills, superior attention to detail, and examples of high-quality digital product experiences. You are both a thorough maker and a rapid prototyper, ideally with experience using AI tools. You are data-informed, user-centred, and capable of balancing business outcomes with design excellence. Strong communication skills in English are essential, along with expertise in leading design and prototyping software. Experience with behavioural interactions, motion design, and storytelling in design is a plus.
Perks and Benefits
Babbel offers 30 vacation days, flexible working hours, and the option to work up to three months within the EU or UK each year through Jobbatical. Employees enjoy access to Babbel’s language learning tools, a yearly learning and development budget, mobility benefits, and a discounted Urban Sports Club membership. The company also provides family and life counselling, equipped office spaces, DE&I community networks such as FLINTA in Tech and Queer Collective, and regular cultural and social events.
Diversity and Inclusion
Babbel is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Applications are encouraged from individuals underrepresented in tech, and candidates are evaluated on skills, qualifications, and business needs rather than strict adherence to listed requirements. Babbel invites applicants to share their pronouns and any accessibility needs to ensure an inclusive application process.
